In the olden days of about
1287 A.D, Kublai Khan’s invasion into Bagan, the Mongol soldiers sacked and
burnt the capital of Bagan. A severe weather troubled the Mongol contingent and
they had to retreat from the land they conquered. They got back to the Myanmar-Chinese
border of Kachin hills. Some Mongol soldiers were very sick; they lagged behind
the main army. At the border area of Kaihtik and Lailaw, some soldier could not
follow their companions. Most of them perished in deep jungle of Kachin. A Chinese soldier (or) Mongol Hogya (or)
Saugya survived in the Kachin Jungle and became a deserter. He had to hide near
Kareng clan’s slash and burn plantation. He was very weak because of sickness.
He snatched away rice meal cooked by the Kareng. He sometimes replaced wild
fowl and doves as an exchange. The Kareng people tried to catch this strange
deserter. At last, they got him. Instead of killing him, they fostered this
Chinese soldier and made him marry their daughters, Kareng Htu Ba and Kareng Kai. As he was a
soldier, he was very cunning and industrious for his dear life. He was clever in archery. So he was accustomed
to live like a Kachin native among the Kareng clam. The Kachins called his
descendants “Miwa labya”.
Miwalabya clam increased
gradually. Our clan brothers are Kyay Kyi (at Gauri Krung valley area), Mihkaw –
Mahka of Ah-Zi and Mi Phu. Miwa Labya descendants inhabited in Kaihtit, Lailaw ,
Bun Kahtawng and Ding Ga Hkran region called “Lana Ga”- Lana land.
Our great - great grandfather
“Tsyin Yam Naw” was very blithe and active. He led a marriage procession to
Hpung gan Gatrawn village where marriage ceremony was held. Tsin Yan Naw was
very sharp and keen in social works. So he was very popular among the Hpung gan
Gatrawn ladies that they nick named him Shabrang Naw. It was about 1900 A.D,
British colonial time.
So we are direct descendants
from this Shabrang Naw. We have to rename our Miwa Labya clan to “Nbrang clan”.
We have to be friend Maran dus (village chieftains of Lailaw). Maran dus live
in coexistance with Nbarng clan. We deal with then in every respect. Regard
them ‘Mayu Status’. But we never marry their daughters. Kachins have three
social standard mayu, dama and brotherhood
Our worshipping spirits
(Nats) are Zau Htung - indoor nut and Tu Nau outdoor nut. Many years passed by
we are baptized to Christians, we throw away some of our household nats
worshipping, they are no more our worshipping nats. We are well cultured and
became Christians in Kachin hills.
Our ancestors of Nbrang clan were born
and very belligerent as a bloodline from fighting spirit of Mongol (or) Chinese
solider named Hogya - Saugya. Nbrang clan served as loyal soldiers in World War
1 and World War 2 under the flag of British Government. Some are still living
in Kaihtik, Bum Kahtawng and Lailaw areas, earn their living as country
farmers, some are urbanized in Bhamo , Myitkyina and other areas.
We are never recognized as five kachin
majority clans because we are half blooded, mixed with Chinese blood, but we
are still kachins of new generation.
Nbrang sub clans are Nmun, Hpaga,
SengGing, Jaiwa, HkringMan, Labu, LaShawt and Ndau we are clan brothers. Our
first mayu race is Kareng clan. Our dama race are Nhkum and Lashi Labya. Lashi
Labya must pay respect to us because we are their mayu, giving their daughters
of them.
Our first ancestor’s name is very
vague whether he was a Chinese soldier or a Mongol soldier. According to his archery
and bravery, he might be a Mongol soldier of that formidable Kublai Khan’s
great army, invaded in Myanmar at the time of region of King Nara Thiha
Pade.
Miwalabya’s appearance has slightly exposed
to facial expression of Mongols who once reigned and roamed across the stepped
of Russia and Central Asia.
